- Expanding its rugged outpost in the disputed South China Sea, China has started building a school for the children of military personnel and others.
- Earlier China established a settlement, Sansha city as it calls it, on tiny Yongxing island where it wants to strengthen its hold as it is thought to be oil-rich. The city has a population of around 1,444 and has good amenities.
- Known as the Woody Island, it is part of the Paracel chain which is also claimed by Vietnam.
- Philippines also protested another land reclamation by China in the McKennan-Hughes reef in the disputed Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.
