- Meeting between Chinese and Vietnamese officials over the dispute in the South China Sea hit a deadlock with both countries reiterating their stand on the issue.
- The issue began when China employed an oil rig in a region of the Paracel Islands which Vietnam claimed to be within its 200 nautical mile-exclusive economic zone.
- China has since then accused Vietnam of disturbing its oil operations, ramming its ships and has also been angered by attacks on Chinese companies in Vietnam. It vowed to protect its own rights.
- China is also embroiled in territorial disputed with Philippines and Japan over the East China Sea, at a time when it is wary of moves by the U.S. to bolster its influence in the region.
