Plan to Set Up Elephant Care Centre at Koorgalli
- Zoo management is planning to set up a care centre for elephants at Koorgalli. It is more likely to result in the decrease in the numbers of elephants that are being showcased currently at the Mysore Zoo.
- As per the order issued in 2009 by the Central Zoo Authority (CZA), elephants must be banned from zoos.
- From last ten years, the Mysore Zoo has been displaying elephants, and thus they had disapproved the order. However, they are ready to provide more space for the pachyderms, but they will be displayed in limited numbers.
- A memorandum has been signed between the Mysore Zoo and the CZA, according to which, only 3 Asiatic elephants will be displayed at the zoo. The remaining ones will be shifted to the elephant care centre on the outer edge of the city.
