Cellphone Theft Cases should be Registered and FIR must be Compulsory

April 14, 2014 by Admin Leave a Comment

  • Cellphone robbery has become huge challenge for law enforcement agencies (LEAs) because of national security implementation connected to it
  • Department of Telecom (DoT) has requested Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to treat cellphone theft in immediate effect and block the phone using IMEI facility
  • When the mobile is lost the customer calls the TSP telephone service provider and blocks the sim card and the TSP can make an IMEI search and block the stolen handset
  • IMEI based search can only be done if all the TSP’s networks across which requires expansion of across resources
  • The best way to deal with this problem is to block all the stolen\lost handsets by informing the TSP’s to blacklist those IMEI numbers and block them
  • According to National Telecom Policy-2012, the DoT setting up a device registry to treat this issue of duplicate IMEI and non-genuine IMEI and blacklisting stolen handsets should be brought into practice

Exams Perspective:

  1. Law enforcement agencies (LEAs)
  2. Department of Telecom (DoT)
  3. International Mobile Equipment Identity(IMEI)
  4. National Telecom Policy-2012
