July 24, 2014 by Admin Leave a Comment

  • Canada will pitch in to position itself to meet India’s demands for pulses as Saskatchewan province grows pulses in huge quantity
  • Traders from India met the growers and exporters and discussed regarding the demand for pulses in the coming months due to festival season
  • Kharif crop yield will be known only by September but agricultural experts are not sure of matching the six million tones on pulses harvested last year
  • The country produced 7.50 lakh tones of lentils last year and imported only 4 lakh tones according to Indian Pulses and Grains Association
  • India the world’s largest producer and consumer of pulses still import around 3.50 lakh tones other pulses from U.S., Australia, Myanmar, East Africa and Ukraine, and Canada being the highest from where pulse are imported
  • India has imported more than one million tones of lentils and yellow peas from Canada last year though China crossed the mark last year India still continues to be the biggest market for pulses
  • Due to inability of Railways in Canada traders from India were worried to transport the contracted produce to the port in Vancouver
  • Now the issue has been taken care and the Railways are back on track and usual time taken is three to four months for pulses to reach India from Vancouver port through ocean freight
