- Parliament has approved the bill to move 205 village’s people spread across seven mandals in the new state Telengana to the State of Andhra Pradesh for the multipurpose Polavaram irrigation project
- Rajya sabha members from Telengana, Odisha and Chhattisgarh opposed the bill passed by Lok Sabha as it would cause problem for the 52,000 Scheduled Castes families from the three states
- D.Raja, CPI member said to pass a new Land Acquisition Act be applied for resettlement and rehabilitation of the affected people
- While the bill was opposed Union Minister told that measures are taken to take steps for rehabilitation and resettlement of the affected people
- Member of UPA government who oversaw the creation of Telengana argued with the members of his own party from Telengana over the bill
- He opined that the commitment made by the UPA government is continued by the present government which reflects democratic politics
- He further added the bill moved by the present government is same that was decided earlier and the changes made by the UPA II are included in the bill
- Mr.Ramesh was interrupted by his own party colleagues he said the decision on Telengana was tough and the issue of Hyderabad was a litmus test for Telangana. For Andhra Pradesh, this project is an emotional issue
- Polavaram project involves massive resettlement and is not an easy task
