- Dinanath Batra controversial teacher turned-activist has formed a “non-governmental” commission to Indianise education, corresponding to the new government’s decision to set up a commission on educational reform
- Mr.Batra along with 15 prominent educationists on board have started working on Non-Government Education Commission (NGEC) and will have 31 members in the team
- NGEC included Kapil Kapoor, former Pro Vice-Chancellor of JNU; B.S. Rajput, former Vice-Chancellor of Kumaun University, and M.C. Pant, former Chairman of the National Institute of Open Schooling
- An enquiry committee in 2003 on Mr.Rajput was set up on the charge of plagiarising a research paper on black holes written by a Stanford University Professor, he had to resign from the Vice Chancellors post then
- A report to the government will be submitted by NGEC who will work for three years on this; he further said “Our commission will introduce education models that are rooted in India’s culture,”
- The Jalandar based Punjab Technical University has already introduced a few courses recommended under this model, Mr. Batra said, had included Vedic Mathematics, Value Education and Integral Humanism
- Mr.Batra does not want to take any funds from the government and told “[U.S. President Barack] Obama coined ‘Yes we can!’ I am also telling you: Yes we can!”
