- 157 asylum seekers, mostly comprising of ethnic Tamils from Sri Lanka had left from the Indian port of Pondicherry and were intercepted by Australian authorities and held on a Custom ship for weeks.
- The group, including 50 children, was brought to the Australian mainland to be interviewed by Indian consular officials so as to be returned to their country. But the group allegedly refused to meet with the officials.
- Australia has now transferred them to the Pacific island of Naaru after they rejected a return to India.
- Lawyers representing the group have challenged the treatment of their clients by Australia and have claimed false imprisonment and have condemned the transfer.
