- One of Brazil’s 77 uncontacted tribes, the Ashaninka native people of northern Brazil from the Panoan linguistic group have emerged on the banks of the Envira River and made contact.
- Experts believe that pressure from illegal logging and drug trafficking drove them to cross the border from Peru in search of allies and weapons.
- The groups probably came in search of technology, or weapons such as axe, knives and pots as an internal war is raging among them due to contact with non-native groups.
- Apart from facing attack by non-native people, many of the tribe members had apparently died of flu and diphtheria.
