- Recently during mock voting using electronic voting machine in Assam capital Guwahati one of EVMs was found to register BJP votes only and this may lead to possibilities of manipulation during voting.
- Hemant Shah, People’s Union for Civil Liberties’ Gautam Thaker and Shabnam Hashmi of ANHAD have sought voting through ballot papers.
- They sought to contradict claims that EVMs are fool proof and pressed for return to old ballot papers despite it being a costly proposition.
- Activists cite instance of 2010 polls in Surat where more votes were polled than voters at five polling stations.
- Election Commission however do not see eye to eye with activists’ allegation about EVMs not being temper proof.
- Activists have also alleged BJP and EC being hand in glove and said they feel unwanted elements have sneaked into EC.
- They pointed out engineers in India and other countries including Germany have proved that EVMs could be tempered with.
