86,000 Tonnes of Bangalore’s E-Waste Adds to Garbage Crisis

August 13, 2014 by Admin Leave a Comment

  • Bangalore e-waste reaches up to 86118 tonnes per year, this is because lack of systematic e-waste disposal
  • As per a study by the Environmental Management & Policy Research Institute (Department of Ecology & Environment Department, Karnataka) city’s 34 authorised e-waste recyclers are functioning at just 10% of their capacity
  • Monitors, Cell phones and keyboards are dismantled informally polluting the environment with toxic heavy metals the authorised recyclers are well versed to dismantle the waste formally but they receive very little to do so, they can treat up to 37000 tonnes of e-waste
  • Hardware manufacturers, It companies, BPO’s and public sector continue to use informally recyclers in spite mandating the ‘E-waste management and handling rules 2011’
  • The report says that huge amount of e-waste from bulk generators is auctioned through professional auctioneers to the highest bidder open for all; “maximum revenue from waste” is the criteria for the selection of a disposal system
  • The domestic e-waste like bulb, batteries etc most often goes to the municipal land fill or the scrap dealer
