- The Karnataka High Court rapped the Bangalore Police over its failure to register an FIR against Yelahanka MLA S.R. Vishwanath over a complaint filed by a resident.
- According to the complaint:
- The MLA had worked as a mechanic (Grade A) with Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd. (HAL) and also served as a member of the Bangalore Urban Zilla Panchayat simultaneously between 2000 and 2005.
- He drew salary from HAL and honorarium from the zilla panchayat during this period.
- Service Rules of HAL bars employees from contesting an election to a local body and becoming a member.
- The Police have now registered an FIR for the alleged offences under:
- Section 176 (failing to furnish information to a public servant) of the Indian Penal Code.
- Section 125 (giving false and/or concealing information) of the Representation of the People Act.
- Following the earlier non-registration of the FIR, the court questions the police over it and also granted the petitioner the liberty to approach the magistrate court.
