2,500 ha Lost During Recent Forest Fires in Bandipur and Nagarahole National Park According to Satellite Images

• Around 2,500 hectares of forest lost due to recent fires.
• This was revealed by Satellite imagery.
• However, only 620 hectares of forest has been affected according to the Forest officials.
• The images were captured by the remote sensing satellites of ISRO.
• National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) which is situated in Hyderabad analyzed the images.
• At NRSC:
  • Terra/Aqua Modis thermal data technique was used to identify active fire, and
  • To determine the degree of burnt region Advanced Wide Field Sensor was used.
• ISRO has a geo-portal ‘Bhuvan’ where all the pictures have been uploaded.
